This October and November, the Roundhouse will present a new season of performances designed to reflect and affect the times in which we are living. And Now What? encompasses spoken word, music, theatre, audio and film to present a picture of today and the issues taking root in the minds of people across society. A thrilling, questioning and unpredictable combination of shows, the season offers a forward-looking platform for open-minded discussion, radical thinking and balance. And Now What? runs from 3 October – 27 November 2017 at the Roundhouse.
Building on the Roundhouse’s radical history, And Now What? will attempt to be a reflection and extension of the lives of its performers and audience, covering such subjects as inequality, mental health, immigration and post-Brexit-vote Britain. Artists include Angelique Kidjo, Yomi Sode, Hack Theatre, Shoutout Network (Mostly Lit podcast), Out-Spoken Press, Testament, Roundhouse Poetry Collective, Brigitte Aphrodite, Talia Randall and Deborah Frances-White (The Guilty Feminist podcast).
The Roundhouse has been imbued with a revolutionary spirit ever since it opened as a performance venue in 1966 as Centre 42, when it also saw the launch of countercultural newspaper, The International Times, an event which set the tone for the ensuing experimental, cultural happenings at the venue. And Now What? is the latest example of the Roundhouse’s importance as a centre for radical, provocative and uninhibited thought.
Rachel Nelken, Senior Producer at the Roundhouse says, “This feels like a really important time to launch our inaugural And Now What? season. We are working with young people and established artists to explore the issues which are most important to them now in an age of tumultuous political and social unrest. We are really looking forward to presenting an eclectic line-up of bold and exciting performances, from gig theatre and spoken word, to live podcasts and film screenings, that provoke conversation and debate around topical issues such as Brexit, immigration, mental health, identity and equality. And Now What? will be a platform that encourages freedom of expression, open discussion and ideas through thought-provoking and hugely entertaining shows and events.”
