Four Star Review from Theatre WeeklyThe Cat in the Hat is playing at the Pleasance Courtyard until the 18th of August. This stage adaptation of the much-loved children’s story is a fun-filled family adventure brimming with mischief and high energy, guaranteed to keep young audiences captivated. The set, lovingly crafted, resonates with Dr. Seuss’s original illustrations, immersing the audience in the whimsical world of the Cat.

The two actors portraying the siblings are lively and engaging, striking a perfect balance between dialogue and speech in unison to drive the simple narrative forward. Adapting a brief book into a 50-minute show is no easy task, yet this production successfully avoids the pitfalls of unnecessary filler.

Instead, it maintains a brisk pace with consistently amusing and energising set pieces, including child-pleasing elements like bubbles, inflatable balls, and classic slapstick humour.

The Cat has plenty of charisma and strong comedic timing, with dual-layered ad libs that had the children and adults in the room chuckling. The piece really elevates in energy and drama during the introduction of Thing 1 and Thing 2. These mischievous characters inject even more chaos into the story, creating obstacles for the children as they frantically try to clean up before their mother returns.

The ensemble cast, who displayed tight choreography and well-coordinated timing, keep the show lively and upbeat.
