Doktor Kaboom: Man of Science is playing at the Pleasance Courtyard until the 26th of August as the Doktor returns to the Edinburgh Fringe for his third year, delivering the same chaotic, fun, and educational experience that has become the show’s hallmark. Having seen Doktor Kaboom’s first Fringe appearance with his The Wheel of Science show, I can attest that this latest iteration retains the energetic spirit that has endeared him to audiences, young and old alike.
The man with the self-confessed funky hair and snazzy clothes, Doktor Kaboom, excels in engaging the audience with quick-witted ad-libs and humorous asides that keep adults entertained while the children remain enthralled by his explosive and mind-bending science experiments. Some of the patter between experiments feels familiar, and a refresh would be welcome for returning fans. Despite this minor gripe, the show’s core remains intact: a series of amusing and awe-inspiring experiments that hold the audience, particularly the children, in rapt attention.
Reviewing a show composed of loosely connected set pieces can be challenging, as it lacks a strong narrative thread. Unlike his previous show, which had the cohesive element of an audience-led spinning wheel to guide the experiments, Man of Science leans more on sheer spectacle. Nevertheless, Doktor Kaboom’s unrelenting enthusiasm and his mission to make science accessible and fun for everyone is clear. His connection with the audience is immediate, using playful stereotypes and interactive call-and-response moments that engage children without becoming tiresome.
Kaboom’s mantras, which I won’t spoil, are memorable and reinforce the idea that science is not just for the classroom but for everyone to enjoy and explore. Doktor Kaboom’s ultimate goal to leave every child with a sense of confidence in their own intelligence and abilities is admirable and well executed.
