Interview Twins Macabre Slay

Meet The Twins Macabre Maurice and Ivy Macabre, the world’s most prolific ten-year-old killers with a penchant for finger painting and murder. Born and raised in a travelling Freakshow, the Twins address with audience with Vaudevillian flare, hosting a devilish spectacle of twisted sketches and original comedy songs.

We caught up with the twins to find out more about The Twins Macabre Slay at VAULT Festival.

The Twins Macabre Slay is Coming to VAULT Festival, what can you tell us about it?

We’re really excited to be back at VAULT Festival with our brand new show ‘Slay’. Maurice and Ivy Macabre are the world’s most prolific ten-year-old killers, fresh off the freakshow circuit and ready to entertain with Vaudevillian flare. In this show, the Twins host an arena spectacular with a star studded audience – we’re bringing equal parts horror and sass. You can expect dark comedy, twisted sketches and original songs. We couldn’t ask for a better venue, in the shadows of the Waterloo Vaults at London’s biggest art festival!

Where did you get the idea for the show?

We were really interested in the dark side of celebrity – how in the past serial killers have become fame icons, and how in today’s society anyone can become an instant ‘star’ overnight. It’s in this way ‘Slay’ is more Black-Mirror-esque than our previous shows. We wanted to explore what would happen if the Twins were sky-rocketed to fame despite having committed several grisly murders.

What inspired you to give it a Vaudeville flavour?

Our shows have always had a Vaudevillian edge to them as the characters were brought up in a freak circus – we love to draw audiences into that world. As performers we both enjoy the cabaret style, not only blending songs and sketches, but also directly addressing the audience throughout allowing for any off-the-cuff moments of interaction. We thought it would be interesting to merge both this Vaudeville theatricality with the modern influences of celebrity, social media and reality TV.

How have audiences reacted so far?

We previewed ‘Slay’ at the London Horror Festival last October and had lots of great comments from the audience. We’ve made a lot of changes for VAULT, including some brand new sketches, new music from our composer Harvey Robinson and a new lighting design by our technician Benjy Adams. We’re excited to unleash it!

Where are you taking the show next?

We are taking ‘Slay’ to the Putney Arches as part of the Fragility Takeover Festival (4th & 5th May) and to Brighton Spiegeltent (15th & 16th May).
