London. 2018. A bedsit. A young woman in trouble. A bridge. A missing teenager – and parents searching for answers.
Struggling to cope with the disappearance of his teenage daughter, secondary school teacher Tom decides to book an escort (Leah) in an attempt to numb his pain. Little does he realise the impact this will have on both their lives and the lives of those closest to them…
Spiral examines the ramifications on the people left behind when a family member disappears, intentionally or otherwise. It questions whether we really know the people we are closest to, what happens when trust breaks down and whether our past shapes our future. At its heart, the play interrogates whether other people can save us, or whether we must save ourselves.
Abigail Hood, who wrote the play says:
“’Dear Steven, we love you, we miss you. We hope you found what you were looking for.’ About five years ago I saw this printed in the bottom corner of a free London newspaper and it caught the breath in my throat. I couldn’t stop thinking about the people that had sent in that entry. My mind was reeling. If the person I loved most in the world walked out of my life, or disappeared from it, how would I feel? How would I go on? It was these questions that prompted me to write a play exploring how people cope in the worst imaginable situation, the strategies they may use and how they would manage to go on living? Well, that was where it began and is where the play begins…two characters; a middle-aged man and a young woman, both of whom have suffered a significant person disappearing from their lives…but, as with all things, once I started to write I found that one question led to another and another and the play is now about many things and my imaginings pushed to their most extreme.”
