Foreword Festival The Space

Foreword Festival The Space

The Foreword Festival is the Space’s premier new writing festival, presenting the debut plays of four promising playwrights. Expect monstrous families, dark comedies, wonky house parties and hope on a London street corner from the brightest in rising stage talent.

Delicacy by Mark Jones, Directed by Sammy Glover (Resident Director at Almeida Theatre and Associate Director at The Big House Theatre) 7th May – 11th May

When it’s reported in the press that the Gibson family have been embroiled in a gruesome neighbourhood murder, their lives are thrown into turmoil. In a TV interview they attempt to gain sympathy from the public, and manage to offend the entire UK population. A deliciously dark comedy about a normal family who try not to become monsters… and fail.

Mycorrhiza by Luke Stapleton Directed by award winning Director Sepy Baghaei (Little Women, Space Productions and Artistic Director of Suitcase Civilians) 14th May – 18th May

Dean and Alicia are stranded on a remote Scottish island. The tide has come in and the Nik Naks have run out. But by digging up the past they uncover painful traumas, the roots of which go deep. A universal black comedy about an unlikely friendship.

Sink by Tobias Graham, Directed by Patrick Bone (Assistant to the Directors, The Inheritance and Director of The Revolution will be Televised, Above the Arts). 21st – 25th May

In the wonky haze of a bathroom at a house party, a group of friends discover sex, drugs, and whether you can still be manly with a glittery butterfly drawn on your face. Painfully awkward, funny and tragic this a raucous celebration of young love and gender identity.

Four O’Clock Flowers by Louise Breckon-Richards, Directed by Kesia Guillery (SLUTS, Voila Festival and Knitters in the Gutter, Lost Theatre) 28th May – 1st June

There’s a shrine outside Anna’s door. Candles. Empty energy drinks. A photograph of a teenage boy. As the crowds finally drift away, one woman remains and Anna has no choice to listen to what she has to say. A moving exploration of knife crime and the impact it has on the families who experience it.

Foreword Festival will be produced by Space Productions the Off West End Award nominated, home grown, professional theatre company at the Space. Space Productions exists to re-invigorate modern classics for a new audience, working collaboratively to create courageous and captivating work and actively seeking to find, nurture and showcase emerging talent. More recently, we have found success developing new work for the stage including the annual One Festival, celebrating the art of solo performance and 2018’s Little Women, a commission from playwright Rachael Claye.
