Stage and screen luminaries Imogen Stubbs, Ciarán Owens, Tom Austen and Julia Chan have joined the cast of Hedda, a bold reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, opening at the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal Bath this July.
They join the previously announced Lily Allen, who takes on the title role in Matthew Dunster’s thrilling new adaptation.
Imogen Stubbs brings a wealth of experience from the RSC, National Theatre, and West End, with acclaimed performances in Othello, Twelfth Night, Uncle Vanya, and A Streetcar Named Desire. Most recently, she starred in Clybourne Park at the Park Theatre and appeared in Netflix’s The Crown.
Ciarán Owens recently wrapped filming on Paramount+ series Curfew and starred in Red Speedo, directed by Matthew Dunster. His stage credits include The Interview and Farewell Mister Haffmann, while his screen work spans Peaky Blinders, Small Axe, and Call The Midwife.
Also joining the cast are Julia Chan (2:22 A Ghost Story, Katy Keene) and Tom Austen (The Royals, Helstrom), with further casting to be announced.
Lily Allen returns to the stage following her Olivier-nominated performance in 2:22 A Ghost Story. Her portrayal of Hedda Gabler promises to be a highlight of the theatrical summer.
Returning from her honeymoon and already disillusioned with her marriage, Hedda is drawn into a dangerous web of desire, manipulation, and betrayal. Trapped by societal expectations and personal demons, she faces an impossible choice.
The production is helmed by Matthew Dunster, known for his work at Shakespeare’s Globe and the Young Vic, and for directing 2:22 A Ghost Story. The creative team includes Anna Fleischle (Set & Costume Design), Ian Dickinson (Lighting Design), Lucy Carter (Sound Design), and Heather Basten (Casting Director).
Hedda runs at the Ustinov Studio from Friday 25 July to Saturday 23 August 2025.
