Director of the Space – Adam Hemming  announces departure after nearly 20 years. The St Paul’s Arts Trust manages the Space and is announcing a new chapter in its story.

Adam Hemming says, ‘It’s been a huge honour and privilege to be Director of the Space. We’ve come through some extremely challenging times, and I’m incredibly grateful to all those who’ve supported me, worked with me and shared in the highs and lows. I always strove to lead the organisation in the spirit that the Space’s founder, Robert Richardson, intended – a welcoming, supportive environment for artists to explore and take risks and a hub for the community to come together and enjoy the arts. It was a very difficult decision, but the time is right for me to explore new challenges.’

Pradeep Jeyaratnam-Joyner, Chair of the Board of Trustees, says. “Adam has made the Space the vibrant community it is today. We are grateful for his leadership – he has lived our mission to increase access to the arts and provide opportunities for new artists, and we wish him great success in all his future endeavours.

Under his tenure, the Space has become a highly-valued part of the London fringe theatre scene, supporting hundreds of theatre-makers and delivering creative opportunities for East Londoners. We continue to manage the Crossrail Place Roof Garden performance space for Canary Wharf Group and were proud to host the first stop on our patron, Sir Ian McKellen’s 80th birthday tour in 2019.

We will aim to build on Adam’s creative legacy, with Matthew Jameson and Bethany Sharp leading the transition to our next phase as Interim Director and Interim Deputy Director respectively. We have a rich and exciting programme coming up and Matthew and Bethany look forward to welcoming our audiences and participants.”
