Edinburgh Fringe Preview: Stampin’ in the Graveyard at Summerhall Arts (Red Lecture Theatre)

Rooted in female rage — explosive, absurd and over-the-top — FATAL FLOWER is a tragi-comic ode to the hysterical woman, told through a bold fusion of cabaret, opera, and classical music. Presented as part of the Big in Belgium showcase, this UK premiere by Valentina Tóth runs at Summerhall Arts, Red Lecture Theatre from 31 July to 25 August (not 12 & 19), at 21:05.

Drawing on her own experiences with body image, the pressures of being a child piano prodigy, and a complex relationship with her mother, Tóth embodies a series of grotesque female archetypes — from Mozart’s Queen of the Night to a furious bride-to-be and a tyrannical Russian piano teacher. Each character channels a rage that is both personal and political, with one spark being the Dutch childcare benefits scandal, where thousands of women were falsely accused of fraud.

Valentina Tóth, an award-winning actress, singer, and theatre maker, brings together all facets of her artistry in this solo performance. Having turned away from a high-pressure classical music career, she now reclaims the stage with a show that is as liberating as it is provocative. FATAL FLOWER premiered in 2024 as Wildbloei and has since earned critical acclaim and the Neerlands Hoop award.

Directed by Stephanie Louwrier, with music by Tóth and Gilles Vandecaveye, and design by Gilles Pollak and Aidan Abnet, this 75-minute performance is suitable for ages 16+ and contains nudity, scenes of a sexual nature and violence, and strong language.
