Award-winning multidisciplinary artist LULA.XYZ brings her critically acclaimed Afrofuturistic theatre series I AM to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a double bill at Iron Belly, Underbelly. For the first time, both episodes of the modular series—I AM – One of many, many of One and I AM – A Walking Universe—will be performed in full, alternating daily from 1–24 August, with a preview on 31 July.

I AM – One of many, many of One explores themes of memory loss, displacement, tradition, and survival through projected video, live music, and Afrofuturistic storytelling. Originally premiered at Summerhall in 2023, it won the Eclipse Award, was nominated for the Filipa Bragança Award, and received the Lustrum Award for most memorable show.

I AM – A Walking Universe is a powerful examination of medical racism in the UK, inspired by personal experiences with uterine fibroids and the systemic neglect of Black women’s health. The piece delves into body autonomy, privacy, desire, and communication.

Performed using MiMU Gloves—gesture-controlled wearable tech developed by Imogen Heap—the series offers a multi-sensory, non-linear anthology experience. LULA.XYZ invites audiences into her studio to witness the creative process and the complexities of being a first-generation East African woman innovating in the arts.
