Doris Crea Collective presents LANDSFRAU هموطن at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a striking interdisciplinary performance that blends music, choreography and poetry to explore identity and belonging in the diaspora.

Performed by Mariann Yar, the show takes the form of an autofictional journey into an Afghanistan shaped by memory, imagination and distance. Set against the backdrop of the 2021 Kabul evacuation and its aftermath, the piece examines how political upheaval reverberates through personal identity.

Through a rich collage of storytelling, movement and sound, LANDSFRAU هموطن navigates the complexities of growing up abroad as a child of Afghan parents. It questions what it means to belong to a place that can no longer be accessed, weaving together fragments of family history with broader reflections on cultural heritage and displacement.

The production juxtaposes Afghan folk music with electronic soundscapes and traditional dance with contemporary choreography, creating a layered and emotionally resonant performance. At its heart, the show is both a personal reckoning and a form of artistic resistance, refusing simple narratives or easy resolution.

As part of the Aurora Nova Edinburgh season, LANDSFRAU هموطن offers a powerful and poetic exploration of identity, memory and the politics of belonging.
