Edinburgh Fringe Review: The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave at Summerhall (Main Hall)

Condensing the spirit of a three-day party into a relentless 60-minute spectacle, The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave is a high-energy celebration of rave culture and the endurance of the human body. Making its UK premiere at Summerhall (Main Hall) from 31 July to 25 August (not 6, 12 & 19), this award-winning dance work is choreographed and performed by Oli Mathiesen alongside Lucy Lynch and Sharvon Mortimer.

Set to a pulsing soundtrack by Detroit DJ Suburban Knight, the show is a visceral, queer, and euphoric tribute to techno and the resilience of community. Three dancers push themselves to the limit in a seamless, sweat-drenched performance that explores joy, transcendence, and the physical toll of survival. The piece is both a celebration and a cathartic release—an acid house remix of collective endurance.

Following acclaimed appearances at Auckland Pride, Sydney Liveworks, and Melbourne Fringe, the production arrives in Edinburgh as part of the Summerhall programme, having won multiple awards including the PANNZ-Edinburgh Fringe Summerhall Award and the Momentous Movement Award at NZ Fringe.
