Edinburgh Interview: Jack Chisnall and Joshua Dolphin on Moon: We Cannot Get Out

Moon We Cannot Get Out

Moon: We Cannot Get Out is coming to The Pleasance what can you tell us about it?

Our show this year is basically us trying to get on with our act while the venue tries to destroy us. It’s a response to our experiences last year of endless tech mishaps in which projectors would never stop finding ways to malfunction. So this year, we’ve devised this ‘killer room’ that we have to deal with. All very Freudian.

What inspired you to write this show?

Last year, we were previewing our little show, which was about a curry delivery, basically. But every time, something new would go wrong in the most eerie way. Every time we troubleshooted one thing, we were presented with a new problem on stage. It became something of an in-joke – how was this new venue going to screw us over this time? So we thought basically we should do a show about an actual room-from-hell. One that’s trying to kill us as we plough on through our act.

Why did you want to write about this subject?

As a coping mechanism basically. If the tech mishaps are controlled, maybe it makes us feel better about them? Comedy as therapy.

How does it feel to be at The Pleasance?

Each to their own, but the Pleasance was always the gold standard for us. All our favourite acts performed there. All of the rooms there have little stories and have had so many greats pass through. Perfect for a show all about how venues can have ghosts in the machine.

What’s the one thing about this show that makes it different from all the rest?

We’ve got accents. And it’s a bit dark at times.

Why should people come see Moon: We Cannot Get Out?

We once had in a very pissed-up stag do of four blokes who started off chatting and drinking amongst themselves, but by the end were so into it. They stumbled into the green room after without permission and told us to “keep at it”. And if we can win over those awful, awful men, we can win over you.

Moon: We Cannot Get Out is at Pleasance Below 31st July – 25th August (not 12th)
