The nation has never been healthier. Crime is down. Streets are clean. Civility reigns. But out of the corner of your eye, you might catch a glimpse of the men keeping things orderly. In a series of brief, enigmatic scenes, two women take us into the heart of a nation disciplined by violence. Developed at PTP/NYC and Play Date @ Pete’s in New York City, this new American play bad things happen here comes to Edinburgh fresh from its acclaimed US premiere.

Playwright Eric Marlin was a winner of the Samuel French OOB Short Play Festival (Breakfast Scene) and a finalist for the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference (bad things happen here). He is a co-founder of the Healthy Oyster Collective, with whom he has created three original works, and is an MFA candidate at the Iowa Playwrights Workshop. B.A.: Bennington College.

bad things happen here is directed by Lila Rachel Becker, who specialises in highly theatrical, incendiary new work and classically-influenced plays that engage with contemporary politics, identities, and power structures. She has developed and directed work with theaters all over the United States, including Actors Theatre of Louisville, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Portland Stage Company, Folger Theatre, and Cloud City.

bad things happen here will be performed by Molly Winstead (The Healthy Oyster Collective, the North Carolina Women’s Theatre Festival, Burning Coal Theatre, and the University of Iowa’s New Play Festival) and Marieta Carrero (Williamstown Theatre Festival, Gene Frankel Theater, Repertorio Español), and original music is by Avi A. Amon (The White City, Yale Institute; and resident composer at the 52nd Street Project).
