Four Star Review from Theatre WeeklyHere There Be Dragons: A Musical Quest is clearly written with love for both D&D and coming-of-age stories, and it pays off big time.

Meet a quirky and lovable group of college students, ready to embark on the next stage of their lives after graduation. Here There Be Dragons: A Musical Quest draws clever parallels between an in-story Dungeons & Dragons quest and the actual drama of the students’ last night on campus, inviting you into a pivotal moment in all their lives.

Here There Be Dragons: A Musical Quest has a tight sense of humour and a charming heart that makes the 90 minutes fly by and leaves you wanting to spend more time with every member of the ensemble cast. While the plot isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, each one of the characters is fleshed out enough to just be happy you’re along for the ride.

Each clear, unique personality is made evident from the start, and there’s enough space in the musical for everyone to get their own arc, even the characters who could easily have been left to be pure comic relief. Indeed, some of the most compelling moments come from the goofy, irreverent humour.

The different plots could feel a little disjointed at times, but the ongoing thread of the campaign ties it all together neatly. The alternate personalities of the characters in and out of the campaign help you get to know them all the better through impressively clever writing.

Whether you’re a D&D fan or not, it’s clear that Here There Be Dragons: A Musical Quest was written with a great love for the game, although you don’t need prior knowledge of the game and how it works. The fantasy elements add some extra flair to what would otherwise still be a heartwarming story about friends finding their way (and love) in the world.

Make sure not to miss Here There Be Dragons: A Musical Quest, offering both fun and sentiment in equal measure.
