Autumn 2017 explores the EPIC at Theatre503; new writing on a larger scale with big casts, big stories and big adventures. Go big, or go home!
Lisa Spirling will make her directing debut as artistic director of Theatre503 with In Event of Moone Disaster, winner of the theatre’s International Playwriting Award 2016. The play, written by Andrew Thompson, covers 80 years of sexual politics through the story of three extraordinary women set against the backdrop of humanity’s journey to the stars. Thompson’s play was chosen from a shortlist of five, selected out of 1600 scripts from across 52 countries. In Event of Moone Disaster was announced as the winner after extensive debate by an expert panel including Mark Lawson, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Roy Williams, Charlotte Keatley, David Greig, Mel Kenyon, Henry Hitchings and Lily Williams.
Andrew says: ‘Opportunities like this are vital to new writers to help introduce themselves to the theatre and to the theatre world at large and I feel incredibly honoured and thrilled to have this opportunity at Theatre503.’
The season will also include: Sid and Viv by Philip Correia, a coming of age drama; the UK premier of The Dark Room by Angela Betzien, which won Best New Australian Work at the Sydney Theatre Awards; Christmas show Scrooge and the Seven Dwarves from The Sleeping Trees, back for a second year by popular demand; and a programme of short runs of new and emerging works, including Unbroken Festival which presents artistic responses to World Mental Health Day.
Theatre503 is passionately committed to providing a launchpad for new writers and supporting the companies that make this work happen to ensure the highest quality on its stage. In the last 18 months 169 new writers have had their work performed there, with three West End transfers and two national tours. A small venue punching well above their weight Theatre503 is air conditioned, with new comfortable seats and a first rate gastro-pub downstairs.
