The Watermill Theatre has released the first rehearsal images for its upcoming production of Piaf, running from 4 April to 17 May, with a press night on 9 April.
Joint CEOs Artistic Director Paul Hart and Executive Director Claire Murray, along with the entire team at Newbury’s Watermill Theatre, are thrilled to announce the full casting for Piaf. This production, written by Pam Gems and directed by Kimberley Sykes, stars Audrey Brisson as Édith Piaf.
Audiences will be drawn into the extraordinary world of Édith Piaf, the French chanteuse who captivated the world with her undeniable talent. Pam Gems’ play, starring Audrey Brisson, charts The Little Sparrow’s dramatic rise from the squalor of the streets of Paris to the glamour of international stardom.
Piaf intertwines the great loves, losses, and questionable decisions of this complex and fragile star with her raw, spellbinding songs, performed live by an ensemble cast of actor-musicians. Still revered as an icon decades after her untimely death, Piaf’s life of no regrets continues to enchant audiences.
Olivier Award Best Actress nominee Audrey Brisson, known for her performance in Amélie the Musical, will play Édith Piaf. Her recent theatre credits include The Enormous Crocodile at Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park, The Land of Might-Have-Been at Buxton International Festival, Jekyll and Hyde at Reading Rep, and Into the Woods at Theatre Royal, Bath.
The cast also includes Jon Trenchard as Bruno, Sam Pay as Leplée and Vaimbert, Signe Larsson as Marlene and Madeleine, Hazel Monaghan as Louis, Oliver Nazareth Aston as Raymond and Theo, Djavan van de Fliert as Marcel and Yves, Marc Serratosa as Charles and Georges, Tzarina-Nassor as Toine, and Kit Kenneth as the Onstage Swing.
Director Kimberley Sykes said, “I am thrilled to be working with such a talented and inspiring cast and creative team to bring Piaf to new life. Through the anguish and the glory, Piaf was uncompromising in her search for connection and meaning. Her songs, her relationships, her audience – they were her truth. It is with this incredible group of theatre makers that we bring that same spirit and passion, to move audiences with Piaf’s tale of absolute artistry and heroic commitment to love.”
The creative team includes Set and Costume Designers James Perkins and Victoria Smart, Musical Supervisor Sam Kenyon, Lighting Designer Prema Mehta, Sound Designer Andy Graham, and Movement Director Michela Meazza.
