Guildford Shakespeare Company (GSC) is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026 with a programme that champions accessibility and artistic ambition. Founded by Sarah Gobran and Matt Pinches, GSC has become one of the UK’s leading independent theatre companies, acclaimed for imaginative storytelling and transforming unexpected spaces into theatrical worlds.
The anniversary season opens with David Copperfield from 6 to 28 February at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford, following its London premiere before touring to Ipswich and Windsor. This playful adaptation of Dickens’ classic promises GSC’s trademark warmth and theatrical invention.
On 10 and 11 April, GSC’s Young Company returns with a devised production inspired by three professional shows from 2025, showcasing the creativity of young performers supported by GSC’s nationally recognised learning programme.
The popular Shakespeare Walks take place on 19 April, with actors appearing in surprising locations across Surrey. The walks’ setting will be revealed later in the spring.
From 1 to 25 July, GSC presents an open-air Shakespeare double bill at Braboeuf Manor: Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing. The latter was GSC’s first production 20 years ago, and this revival, co-produced with Orange Tree Theatre and directed by Tom Littler, will frame the comedies as a love saga set around World War II.
The year concludes with a brand-new interactive Murder Mystery at Hogs Back Brewery from 24 October to 15 November, continuing GSC’s tradition of site-responsive whodunnits.
Co-founder Matt Pinches said, “In 2006 neither of us imagined the journey GSC would go on; the list of landmark moments is truly humbling. Our stage programme this year combines everything that GSC is about: exceptional theatre in extraordinary places. From celebrating new work and partnerships, to returning old favourites, we’re really looking forward to celebrating them and the people who make it all happen as we move through 2026.”
