Interview: Dom Hartley-Harris on Dom Hartley-Harris: Live in London at Crazy Coqs

“I’ve always wanted to bring a solo show to London but always been a little nervous to do so. But after the past few years and never knowing when the opportunity to perform could be stripped away from you, I thought I’d just bite the bullet”

Dom Hartley-Harris, star of West End musicals Hamilton, Bat out of Hell and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, brings his debut solo show Dom Hartley-Harris: Live in London to Crazy Coqs on Wednesday 5 October 2022.

For one night only, Dom will take the audience on a sensational melodic journey celebrating the best of pop, rock and musical theatre, featuring an incredible line-up of songs by Gregory Porter, John Legend and more.

Since graduating from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a BA Honours in Acting, Dom Hartley-Harris has starred in numerous West End and Off West End productions. Having received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Collins in Hope Mill Theatre’s RENT, Dom has most recently been playing Curtis Taylor Jr in the UK Tour of the hit Broadway and West End musical Dreamgirls.  Dom’s passion project is his high-end function band at Apollo music, The Showband. His television credits include a featured role in BBC One’s Doctors.

You’re bringing your debut solo show to Crazy Coqs, what can audiences expect from the night?

They can expect a truly heartfelt night with lots of soul and an eclectic mix of music. I’ll be performing songs made famous by artistes such as Nina Simone, The Temptations, Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra.

You’ve got a real mix of musical theatre styles in the show, how did you go about selecting what to include?

Well, my stage history speaks for itself. From Hamilton and Bat out of Hell  to Dreamgirls and RENT, I’ve not made a habit of sticking to one style of show and I thought this concert should reflect that. Plus, I love so many genres.

Why did now feel like the right time to bring this show to London?

I’ve always wanted to bring a solo show to London but always been a little nervous to do so. But after the past few years and never knowing when the opportunity to perform could be stripped away from you, I thought I’d just bite the bullet when James Quaife and Robin Rayner from New Frame Productions approached me

What is it about Crazy Coqs that makes it ideal for your show?

My ideal style of music, and my first loves when it comes to music styles, are Motown and Jazz. Crazy Coqs has such an elegantly classic feel that it suits the mood of my concert perfectly.

You’ll be joined by special guest, Maiya Quansah-Breed, what made you want to have Maiya with you on the night?

I was lucky enough to star in RENT with Maiya at the Hope Mill and instantly feel in love with her voice. She’s so talented and brilliant to work with. It was a no-brainer.

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Dom Hartley-Harris: Live in London?

It’s going to be a really chilled night. It would be an absolute pleasure for my wonderfully talented Musical Director Chris Poon (currently working on TINA The Musical), my fabulous guest star Maiya and I, to see you there. We can’t wait!
