With music and lyrics by Joshua Fowley, Little Sausage; a new musical is coming to The Other Palace Studio in March.

Directed by Annabelle Hollingdale, Little Sausage is a new verbatim musical about the nation’s most controversial Sausage. It uses the real words of ‘real’ men to explore toxic masculinity, plant-based dating, and the game-changing Gregg’s vegan sausage roll.

Dan Bravo (he/him) will play Isaac, Owen Clayton (he/they) will play Junior / Dave / Ensemble and Joanna Clarke (she/her) will play Cassie / Elliot / Ensemble.

Little Sausage is at The Other Palace Studio 4th and 5th March 2022.

Little Sausage is coming to the Other Palace Studio, what can you tell us about the show?

Little Sausage is a new verbatim musical exploring the myth that meat equals manliness. It uses real words of vegans and non-vegans alike to explore the question of is there enough room around the dinner table for everyone.

What inspired you and Deborah Vogt to write Little Sausage?

We decided to write Little Sausage coming off the backlash towards the Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll. A culturally defining moment like that needed to be explored. Little Sausage was born. As passionate plant based pals, we thought that healthy whole-grain discussion was needed so we hunted our social groups for willing humans to speak honestly.

This is a verbatim musical, tell us a little more about the process turning interviews into a musical?

Very tricky! Deborah, the playwright, organised the words from the transcribed interviews into a kind of format and structure was created through experimentation. Being a drummer helped me explore complex rhythms to fit the text to song.

How would you describe the music you’ve written for Little Sausage?

The music is in the folk pop genre with what I hope are catchy hooks and lingering melodies. I want my music to be stuck in people’s heads for weeks, no years. I’ve collaborated and played with many musicians and singers. Bringing my style of music over to the theatre world has been so much fun.

What are you looking forward to about seeing this cast bring your work to life?

The cast are incredible and each bring unique perspectives on the piece. One of our lovely actors was there from the beginning and has been on this journey with us. He understands the essence of the show and it’s great we can work with him again. Having been present in the interview process to collect the words, it’s now interesting to see how the cast embody these characters. We have played snippets to the cast to give them an insight into the people they are portraying.

It’s not always easy to get new work seen, what opportunities is this run giving you?

Having the chance to perform at The Other Palace has been brilliant . We’ve made new contacts, met potential sponsors and reached new fans. After the Vaults Festival was cancelled, we didn’t know what would be next so we’re so excited to be able to share this work with new audiences. We hope this is the start of a longer tour and run of this show!

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Little Sausage?

Do it! When will you get another chance to see people sing about Greggs?!
