Interview Kim Maresca on Ruthless The Musical

Interview Kim Maresca on Ruthless The Musical

An all-star cast make up the company of Joel Paley and Marvin Laird’s award-winning all female character camp killer cult classic Ruthless! The Musical for its strictly limited 14 week run at the Arts Theatre.

Ruthless! The Musical tells the story of the beautiful and talented 8 year old Tina Denmark who will do anything to play the lead in her school play… ANYTHING!

Ruthless! started Off-Broadway 25 years ago and discovered young performers including Britney Spears and Natalie Portman. The show famously spoofs Broadway musicals from Gypsy to Mame as well as iconic films including The Bad Seed and All About Eve.

Kim Maresca plays Judy Denmark, reprising the role she played Off Broadway in the most recent run of Ruthless! The Musical. We caught up with Kim to find out more.

What can you tell us about Ruthless! The Musical?

Ruthless! The Musical is a smart, quick, and hilarious musical comedy about ambition and narcissism and how they can affect the mother/daughter relationship.  It tells the story of 8 year old Tina Denmark, who will do just about anything to get what she wants. And what she wants is to be a star.  There are twists and turns and lots of fun along the way!

Tell us about your character?

I play Judy Denmark, Tina’s mother.  I’m a picture perfect mother and housewife living an idyllic suburban life, but I end up having my own evolution while Tina goes to shocking lengths in pursuit of stardom.

You were in the off-Broadway version, how does it feel to be bringing Ruthless to London’s West End?

It’s incredibly exciting!  I love this show, and it’s such an honour to continue on its journey.

How do you think London audiences will respond to Ruthless?

I think they’re going to love it!  Wonderful music, a genius script, and sharp dark humour… all perfect components for the theatre savvy audience that I know Londoners to be.

What are you most looking forward to about working in London?

I’m just looking forward to continue working on this show.  Having this amazing city as the backdrop is an incredible bonus.  It’s a true privilege to become a small part of London’s rich theatre history. And I love high tea!

What are you looking forward to about reprising your role with a new cast?

Working with a new cast opens the door to so many new opportunities. It’s a chance for me to discover, through my fellow actors’ interpretations of their characters and my interactions with them, things about Judy that may not have been there before.

Have you ever seen Jason Gardiner judge on Dancing on Ice? He’s Ruthless!

I haven’t seen him yet, but that’s what I hear!  It’s hard to imagine considering what a joy he is in rehearsal every single day!

What’s the most Ruthless thing you’ve ever done?

Hate to admit it, but I’m definitely a goody-two-shoes!  I did steal a sweatshirt from my brother once…  wow that’s pretty lame.

Ruthless! The Musical is at The Arts Theatre 16th March – 23rd June.
