You’re starring in Coven at Kiln Theatre, what can you tell us about the show?
Coven is a new musical all about witches – well, the Pendle witch trials in Lancashire to be precise! The story, based on true events, is incredibly moving and powerful.
The cast are FIRE and the music is a mix of folk, pop, Americana… it breaks the mould of most musical theatre I can think of! It’s ambitious and bold – and it pours with unapologetic power and feminism at its heart.
Coven is inspired by the infamous Pendle Witch Trials, what drew you to this story and your role as Rose?
One of the biggest draws for me with the show is its geographical context. Lancashire is where half my family come from… I class myself as a pink rose – being half Yorkshire, half Lancashire!
You could actually see Pendle Hill from my dad’s old house! I remember hearing stories about the witch trials and the magic in the mist over the tops. It’s an honour to be part of Coven and to tell this story.
I also get to play Rose, who is a feisty, fearless woman with fierce loyalty. She is a delight to play – for both her inner fire and her vulnerability.
The show features music by Rebecca Brewer and Grammy Award-winner Daisy Chute, what can audiences expect from the score?
For me – the music is the heartbeat and superpower of this show! I’ve actually been part of Coven since its very first workshops in 2021/2022(?) and I genuinely have had some of these songs stuck in my head for THAT long.
The music is rooted in proper musicianship. Lyrically it leads the storytelling – but every song is a standalone TUNE, each with its own versatile sound and style.
Not to mention – it’s all performed live on stage with a live band and incredible actor-musicians. If they don’t do a cast album I’ll be livid! Not just for audiences – but for myself!!
What has it been like working under the direction of Olivier Award-winner Miranda Cromwell?
Miranda Cromwell has been such a dream to work with. Honestly. Those who get to, are lucky ones!
Not only is she a caring, thoughtful human with bags of empathy – she is a powerhouse, with enigmatic vision and heart. She creates a room that’s full of play and care and energy. Laughs. Cries. You name it, we all went through it together.
We often had a dance-off after a long day of rehearsals. The show has some heavy themes – and I’m telling you, there’s nothing like a full cast boogie to Beyoncé to finish a long day!
The show explores themes of power, persecution, and sisterhood, how do these resonate with today’s audiences?
The show explores themes of power, persecution, and sisterhood. These are all things that are resonating with our audiences every show.
We’ve had a standing ovation every night along with a lot of people being really touched and moved by the themes in the show. We are really proud of it.
What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Coven?
