Oxford Playhouse has announced a bold new staging of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, directed by Artistic Director Mike Tweddle.
The production will run from Friday 20 February to Saturday 7 March 2026, forming part of the venue’s Spring 2026 season.
First performed in 1962, Albee’s Tony Award-winning play is a gripping and darkly funny exploration of truth, illusion, and the lies we tell ourselves and those closest to us.
This marks Mike Tweddle’s first in-house production at Oxford Playhouse since taking up the post of Artistic Director in 2023. Earlier this year, he directed Macbeth with Out of Chaos to great acclaim.
Tweddle’s previous work at Bristol’s Tobacco Factory includes A View from the Bridge and Beautiful Thing, both of which received critical praise.
Mike Tweddle said:
“I’ve loved Edward Albee’s masterpiece for as long as I can remember. There is no other play like it. A wildly entertaining and emotionally profound evening, with jaw-droppingly inventive language, it is an incredible experience for audiences. It’s an honour to be working with a stellar creative team who are all dedicated to making this an unforgettable theatrical moment in Oxford.”
This landmark production signals a new chapter for Oxford Playhouse, reaffirming its role as a producer of high-quality drama and its historic place in British theatre.
The Playhouse’s return to producing began with Breaking the Code, a co-production with Royal & Derngate, which plays in Oxford from 7 October 2025.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? will be staged with raw intensity and searing insight, promising an electrifying theatrical experience.
