Lemons transports us to a world where language is limited: the government introduces a ‘hush law’ limiting its citizens to speak 140 word a day. The play deliberates social conflicts of today and the wider issue of democracy and freedom of speech while also revealing the blossoming and breakdown of a couple under this pressure. Alongside the affects of Brexit, Steiner’s examination of modern society is regarded with unanticipated consequences (Black Mirror springs to mind). In a world where Donald Trump announces his agenda via Twitter, Lemons could not be more relevant to demonstrate the power of language.
Lemons is at The Barons Court Theatre 29th April to 19th May 2019.
