Three Mothers is a new play by Matilda Velevitch which follows the stories of three women and explores the themes of emotional and physical migration; home, and women moving forward with their lives.  It will be performed in London for the first time at Waterloo East Theatre from 31st October to 12th November.

Three Mothers spans a time frame of 60 years across three different continents – Khady sends her eldest son away from Senegal in search of a better life; Gisela attempts to assist the refugees arriving in her childhood village in Bavaria which awakens memories from her own past; and Erika reveals a heart-breaking secret about her enforced march from Sudetenland in 1945 with her baby daughter.

In writing the play Matilda Velevitch seeks to illuminate common ground and increase awareness of the plight of refugees and their arrival into a new country and culture – “I wanted to write a play telling untold stories of forced migration, which broaden our understanding by weaving contemporary and historical material together, placing 1940’s migration from Sudetenland alongside today’s migrant stories.”

Director Janys Chambers, New Writing Associate at Octagon Theatre Bolton, directs the play for the second time after it was premiered as a rehearsed reading at the Octagon as a Top 5 winner earlier this year.  Janys has over 30 years’ experience in Theatre, Television and Radio, including nominations for BAFTA, Writers Guild, British Soap and Manchester Theatre Awards.

Janys Chambers commented, “At once lyrical, warm and funny, the play looks at what is perhaps the most urgent human crisis in our world – migration  – through the simple personal stories of three ordinary women, Three Mothers; and the hope embodied in one son sent spinning across the world.”

Three Mothers will open at the Waterloo East Theatre London on October 31st – November 12th 2017.  More information here.  www.threemothers.co.uk
