Four Star Review from Theatre WeeklyFor fans of the iconic 1970s BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, Faulty Towers The Dining Experience at the President Hotel offers a hilarious and immersive tribute to the beloved series. Produced by Interactive Theatre International, this two-hour interactive show combines slapstick comedy, improvisation, and audience participation with a 70s-style three-course meal, creating an unforgettable evening of chaos and laughter.

The production is built around Basil (Lawrence Watling), Sybil (Nerine Skinner), and Manuel (Leigh Kelly)—the dysfunctional trio whose antics defined the original series. From the moment guests arrive, the actors are fully in character, setting the tone for what is essentially a live episode of Faulty Towers. Basil’s sharp wit and exasperation, Sybil’s shrill authority, and Manuel’s bumbling naivety are all brought to life with uncanny accuracy. The cast’s ability to embody these characters—including their mannerisms and comedic timing—is remarkable, drawing frequent applause and laughter from the audience.

The actors interact directly with guests throughout the evening, weaving audience details into their routines with impressive spontaneity. Whether it’s Basil chastising diners for daring to ask for more butter or Manuel hilariously misunderstanding orders, the comedy feels fresh and unpredictable. Classic moments from the show are cleverly incorporated, such as Manuel’s infamous pet rat incident or Basil’s fire drill fiasco. These nods to the original series delight long-time fans while maintaining accessibility for newcomers.

The dining element of the experience includes soup for starters, roast chicken with vegetables for mains, and a cheesecake for dessert (with alternatives available to suit dietary requirements). It might not be the best meal you’ll ever eat, but it’s tasty enough and a lovely homage to our supposed Torquay setting.

The setting at the President Hotel perfectly complements the show’s immersive nature. The dining room transforms into a chaotic restaurant reminiscent of Torquay’s most infamous establishment. Be prepared for a bit of wait at the bar, and don’t expect ample elbow room at the table…This is Faulty Towers after all!

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience succeeds as both a loving homage to the original series and a standalone theatrical event. Its mix of nostalgia, improvisation, and audience interaction creates an evening that is equal parts absurd and delightful.
