The Horton, Epsom’s unique arts venue, will open its gardens for the first time this summer, launching a vibrant season of outdoor theatre, music, and family events beginning 29 July.
The Grade II-listed venue, formerly Horton Chapel, has transformed its once-overgrown grounds into a welcoming green space for the community.
Built in 1901 as part of Europe’s largest psychiatric hospital complex, The Horton was originally a chapel offering solace and, later, pioneering music therapy. After decades of dereliction, it reopened in 2022 as a cultural hub.
Now, the venue’s gardens—once a tangle of brambles and rubble—have been revived by volunteers planting trees, clearing invasive plants, and preparing lawns and wildflower beds.
Maria Reeves, Director of The Horton, said, “We are so thrilled to finally be opening this exciting addition to our venue, and expanding our visitor experience. The Horton’s beautiful gardens form a stunning setting for our unique building, and we can’t wait to welcome visitors either to take part in the season of outdoor events or simply sit on a bench and enjoy a coffee. It’s a space open to all.”
The outdoor season opens with Mrs Armitage on Wheels on 29 July, an interactive adaptation of Quentin Blake’s classic tale, presented by Scoot Theatre. This 40-minute show is packed with live music, puppetry, and physical comedy, perfect for children aged 3+.
On 2 August, families can step inside The Whale, an 18-metre inflatable creature hosting a magical theatre experience by Circo Rum Ba Ba. The show combines puppetry, comedy, and music to explore ocean life and environmental themes.
On 16 August, Everywhere’s A Beach brings aerial circus theatre to The Horton’s gardens. Performed on a giant spinning parasol, this high-energy show promises dizzying fun for all ages.
On 23 August, children can join Message In A Bottle, a free circus workshop led by actors Susy Puckett and Neil Sweeney. Kids are encouraged to dress as pirates or mermaids and try juggling, dance, and drama.
The season concludes on 28 August with The Music of Trees, a sunset concert by acoustic guitarist Geoff Robb. Inspired by woodland folklore, this award-winning performance blends storytelling and original compositions.
