Fifty years after its critically acclaimed Broadway premiere, Edward J. Moore’s The Sea Horse will receive its long-awaited London debut this November at the Golden Goose Theatre.
Running from 4th to 15th November 2025, this Drama Desk Award-winning play is directed by Mandi Riggi and stars Rachael Bellis and Jay Rincon.
Set in a dark waterfront bar of the same name, The Sea Horse is a tender yet brutally honest love story between two hardened outsiders: Gertrude, the tough, guarded bar owner, and Harry, a weathered seaman with a new dream.
Their relationship, once purely physical, is tested when Harry returns from sea with a vision of a shared future and a proposal of marriage.
As Harry attempts to break through Gertrude’s emotional defences, the play becomes a raw and compelling courtship ritual, filled with fighting, humour, and the painful revelation of long-held secrets.
First performed in New York in 1974, the play’s themes of vulnerability and the transformative power of love remain as poignant today as ever.
Director Mandi Riggi said:
“Five decades since its debut at New York’s Circle Rep, this raw, beautiful story is more relevant than ever. In our fast-moving high tech world, where humans feel increasingly disconnected from each other, The Sea Horse’s themes of vulnerability and human connection should still resonate deeply with audiences today. I am incredibly excited to be bringing this story to life in London in the hands of our immensely talented cast, Rachael Bellis and Jay Rincon.”
Rachael Bellis plays Gertrude. An American actor trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute via NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, her stage credits include ebaby, Sunday on the Rocks, As You Like It, and Othello.
Jay Rincon, who plays Harry, is a Michigan native whose screen credits include Silo, Cold Feet, Coronation Street, and Sandman. His stage work includes Miracle on 34th Street, Crazy For You, and Barcelona in the West End.
The Sea Horse runs at the Golden Goose Theatre from 4th to 15th November 2025, with performances Tuesday to Saturday at 7:30pm.
