The Shakespeare Project Macbeth

The Shakespeare Project Macbeth

On 23rd April, to celebrate the Bard’s birthday, Kent’s theatre fans can look forward to a brand new professional Shakespeare company setting up shop in the Garden of England!

The Shakespeare Project is led by Artistic Director Peter Basham , a professional actor from Tunbridge Wells and graduate in classical theatre from Bristol Old Vic. Peter is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a key member of their education team. As well as being passionate about Shakespeare, Peter has starred in high profile TV shows ( The Promise, Sherlock, Agatha Raisin, Berlin Station ) and a number Hollywood blockbusters including Skyfall and Inception .

The Shakespeare Project team includes fellow local Laurence Taylor as Executive Producer and RSC Associate Director Joe Pitcher (Matilda The Musical), along with creative input from John Martin, Ben Humphrey and Allan Corduner.

The company’s first production Macbeth will take place at Salomons Estate in Tunbridge Wells from 5th – 24th November 2019 . The original Victorian theatre will provide a stunning backdrop for the play and an intimate setting, creating an experience close to the original performances of Shakespeare’s times. The project is an exciting prospect for arts enthusiasts and a real boost to the cultural offering of the area.

Peter Basham said: “When I approached the folks at Salomons they were really excited with the prospect of this space being utilised for the local community. At the Shakespeare Project, our company mission is to be the best professional shakespeare company in the South East, we want to reach the widest possible audience and leave a lasting legacy of quality classical theatre for the people of Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas”

Technical management will be provided by SA Events in Maidstone , there will also be local auditions for professional actors, volunteering opportunities for theatre fans and students, plus education workshops for schools. The production is also partnering with Hospice in the Weald for a special charity Gala performance.

The team have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise vital funds, providing a great opportunity to get involved in this fantastic project at an early stage. Pledge package options include tickets to the show, VIP tickets to the Gala Performance, access to special open rehearsal and Afternoon tea with cast and creatives. The Kickstarter campaign ends on Saturday 11th May.
