Theatr Clwyd to Offer Live Streaming of Shows

Theatr Clwyd is all set to start Live Streaming some of its productions in a joint pilot project with Anglo-Danish technology company, Streamer.  The aim behind the project is to develop the use of live streaming to reach a wider, even global audience for the theatre’s work, as well as enabling productions and events to be seen by audiences in care homes, hospitals and schools as part of a community engagement programme.

Liam Evans-Ford, Theatr Clwyd’s Executive Director commented “Theatr Clwyd is very pleased to be working in partnership with Streamer on this exciting new project to make our shows accessible to new audiences in north Wales and beyond who are currently unable, for a variety of reasons, to come to our theatre. This innovation represents a brand new phase in our digital development and we are looking forward to the first show being broadcast later this year.”

The theatre’s technology partner, Streamer, has developed a live stream product that easily enables online broadcasts to be created with professional quality, and be received by anyone watching on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Carl Walker, Managing Director of Streamer, said “We are so excited to be working with a theatre of such calibre as Theatr Clwyd on this 12 month project, which will see live streaming being used to enable theatre to be accessed by anyone. Our technology offers arts venues and regional theatres a different scale of broadcasting to the existing live streams from the National Theatre and RSC, enabling them to explore a potential new business model via pay-per-view and really allowing the creation of a ‘theatre without walls’ to reach a new audience.”

As well as productions, Theatr Clwyd will also live stream events such as rehearsals and interviews with actors, which can be viewed by an online audience and also broadcast live in to schools – with pupils able to take part in interactive discussions as part of the live stream.

Full details of Theatr Clwyd shows and other events to be streamed will be available later in the spring.
