Kwame Kwei-Armah, Artistic Director of the Young Vic, today announces YV Music: ShezAr X Singing Soul Sirens. Each evening will see Hackney-born soul siren ShezAr and her house band headline and host an evening of rip-roaring soul, R&B, hip-hop & funk, featuring invited special guests and open mic spots. The first three evenings – Friday 13 March, Thursday 30 April and Thursday 30 July – are on sale to the public today.

ShezAr, a current competitor on ITV’s The Voice, is renowned in the music industry for her artistry, eclectic diverse vocal ability and musicianship, as well as over 15 years’ experience in choral arranging & directing. She founded vocal group Singing Soul Sirens in January 2018.

ShezAr said: “The Young Vic has allowed the Soul Siren (me) ?, to sound the alarm and make the Call! To be given a platform to bring my love and passion for entertainment, music and connecting with people in to a space that is welcoming and essentially safe to be vulnerable, self-express & uplifted is just truly special; however, a live music Night in a venue as the Young Vic is even more special. This Night will be open to all creatives and lovers of music to come together and share. Be ready to move & groove, be serenaded and elevated on many levels through the sounds of live soul-full music.”

Kwame Kwei-Armah said: “I want to explore new ways of using the Young Vic spaces in order to play with art and form, and to challenge expectations of how people can engage with our theatre. I can think of no one better to launch this than ShezAr. It’s going to be dope!!”

YV Music is a new strand of nights and events that get audiences up close with the best in established music talent at the Young Vic, as well as creating spaces for audiences and emerging musicians to participate and collaborate in the creation of the highest quality entertainment. It is part of the YV’s commitment to celebrating liveness in all its artistic forms, genres and styles. The open mic spots give emerging singers a chance to showcase their vocal talent with the support from ShezAr and her band of seasoned musicians. Talent are invited to arrive between 8-9pm to secure a spot on the open mic list.
