The 12 finalists for the 18th annual Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition have been announced ahead of the gala final at the Sondheim Theatre on Sunday 7 June 2026.

Affectionately known as SSSSPOTY, the competition will be hosted by Oscar Conlon-Morrey, returning to the event where he previously won the Julia McKenzie Prize in 2017.

More than 350 submissions were received this year, with 81 performers invited to audition in person before a panel led by Chair of Judges Edward Seckerson.

The final 12 selected represent leading drama schools and training institutions across the UK.

This year’s finalists are Ruby Decent, Charlotte English, Cait du Feu, Marcus Harman, Rebecca Hennessey, Róisín Holland, Taziva-Faye Katsande, Samuel Louis Bennett, Erica Schoebinger, Josephine Shaw, Rosie Sutton and Freddy Thompson.

They will each perform one Stephen Sondheim song alongside a piece from the New UK Musicals catalogue, continuing the competition’s commitment to supporting new writing.

The winner will receive £1,000 and the opportunity to headline their own Sondheim-inspired cabaret in London, with additional prizes awarded to the runner-up and third place.

The judging panel includes Edward Seckerson alongside Melanie La Barrie, Andy Nyman, Jenna Russell, Rachel Tucker and Matt Wolf.

The gala will also feature special performances from National Youth Music Theatre cast members, Gracie McGonigal and previous SSSSPOTY winner Stuart Thompson.

Craig Glenday, Chair of The Stephen Sondheim Society, said: “Whatever the outcome of this year’s competition, it’s going to be a fantastic afternoon of music at the Sondheim. The calibre of the finalists is going to make the job of picking a winner a difficult one, and I don’t envy Edward and his jury. I say this every year, but the standards just keep on rising, which is a sign of the UK’s very healthy musical-theatre scene. Thank you to all the colleges and students that applied – it’s been a privilege to hear you all perform. And best of luck to the Finalists!”

The competition has a strong track record for identifying rising stars, with previous finalists including Cynthia Erivo and past winners such as Taron Egerton, Erin Doherty and Courtney Bowman.
