A bold new production of Richard III will arrive at London’s Cockpit Theatre for a strictly limited run from 8 to 11 July.

Directed by and starring award-winning Argentine theatre-maker Nicolás Pérez Costa, the production previously enjoyed a successful run at Madrid’s Teatro Infanta Isabel before transferring to a larger venue and earning multiple Off Theatre Award nominations.

This reinterpretation places Shakespeare’s infamous king in a dystopian world, blending physical theatre with live percussion to immerse audiences in a raw and visceral environment.

Performed in the round, the production situates the audience at the heart of a decaying universe where power is contested through bodies, rhythm and violence.

Pérez Costa leads an international cast that includes Hugo Coello, reprising his award-nominated performance as Hastings, alongside Marta Carvalho as Queen Elizabeth and Tricia Hitchcock as Buckingham.

Further casting includes Juliet Prew as Queen Margaret, Mathew Miles as King Edward and Lord Stanley, Julia Rose Lisa as Lady Anne and Lord Grey, Tom Longmire as Clarence, Oliver Broad as Lord Rivers, Nabhan Uddin as Tyrell and Germán Martins as Catesby.

Widely regarded as one of Shakespeare’s most compelling villains, Richard III’s story of ambition, manipulation and ruthless ascent is reimagined through a highly physical theatrical language, offering a fresh perspective on the enduring classic.

Pérez Costa, who has more than 25 years’ experience in theatre, is known for visually striking and emotionally driven productions, and has directed over 100 works across Argentina and Spain.
