As Work Dries Up Across Theatreland Here are Some Options For Paid Work That Employers Are Desperate to Fill

Supermarkets are hiring extra staff to cope with demand

As the world faces a health emergency on a scale we’ve never experienced before, our lives are changing quickly and in ways we never thought possible.  Closer to home the Government has advised people to stay away from bars, restaurants, coffee shops and theatres – and overnight so many people in our industry found themselves out of work and with no source of income.

But with crisis comes new opportunities, where many businesses are closing their doors, others are having to step up to literally feed the nation.  While these aren’t necessarily the jobs we’d imagined ourselves doing, they are temporary roles, and most importantly paying a salary. And these companies are desperate to recruit people now!

The list only covers jobs that pay a salary/hourly rate, and where you’ll have some kind of contract of employment.  There are of course many more gig economy jobs out there, like delivery drivers for Just Eat or Deliveroo and if you have any kind of creative skill (we know you do) then Fiverr is a good place to advertise what you can do.

But, if you want some kind of stability, and to know that you can cover the bills, then these are the best options we could find, and we’ve included the links to all their current vacancies.

Supermarkets are facing extraordinary pressure to keep the shelves stocked and to keep the nation fed.  At the moment Tesco seem to have the biggest number of vacancies, along with the best hourly rates, they have a huge number of vacancies in London, but with stores in every UK postcode you can find roles wherever you are in the country.  Sainsbury’s are also calling for more staff and are releasing their vacancies on Thursday 19th March. Asda haven’t specifically put out a call for extra staff as a result of the current situation, but do have some vacancies on their website.

Amazon

With large swathes of the country confined to their homes, Amazon are seeing a huge increase in online orders.  They are hiring temporary staff at their biggest fulfilment centres. There’s also opportunities for longer term roles, which come with great benefits like private health insurance.

Cleaning

Public spaces which remain open, and in particular hospitals, are in desperate need of cleaners to help maintain hygiene and safe environments.  Total Jobs currently have almost 700 cleaner vacancies in London.

Call Centres

Not all call centres are sales jobs, with many businesses and customers facing uncertainty, calls to customer contact centres are increasing daily.  Reed allows you to search for ‘inbound’ call centre roles, meaning you can avoid being a push salesperson (unless you like that kind of thing).
