Audible, the world’s leading provider of spoken word entertainment, today announces Theatre at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019, a collection of five new plays from this year’s Fringe.
Audible has selected a cross section of some of the most exciting new plays of the year, inviting the actors and directors into the studio to record stirringly intimate audio performances of the productions for listeners. Plays in the collection are by turns moving and topical, tackling issues such as mental health, race, identity and belonging.
Ryan Calais Cameron, author of Typical, said: “It’s an honour to have my work to be working with Audible on such a deep and inspiring piece, audio drama is such a great platform to really try testing and pushing people on the way they think and feel, and the way they look at the world and one another. I can’t wait for people to hear this story.”
Sorcha McCaffrey, author of Ladybones, said: “Recording Ladybones with Audible was a delightful experience. Discovering how to tell this story as a piece of audio reminded me how powerful imagination can be. It was wonderful to have the chance to dive back into the story, uncover new moments, and reach people who maybe can’t make it to the theatre.”
Abigail Gonda, UK Theatre director at Audible said “We are thrilled to present the audio productions of five plays from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year. In putting together this collection, we chose plays with a uniting thread of richly drawn characters we immediately cared about, whose stories we felt compelled to listen to. They are not always easy listens; they plumb the depths of human existence and all its complexities. Through these stores we experience the profoundly cruel and unfair nature of life, love and caring being found in unlikely circumstances, and discover the inner strength that can emerge when faced with adversity. The intimacy of these performances grabs you tight and demands you take notice. We believe they will delight, devastate, anger and inspire you.”
