The Menier Chocolate Factory has announced that Charlotte d’Amboise will join multi-award-winning actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson in Jay Presson Allen’s Tru, directed by Rob Ashford.

The production opens on 27 September, with previews from 19 September, and runs until 14 November 2026. It follows a critically acclaimed New York engagement earlier this year, where Ashford, Ferguson and d’Amboise collaborated on the production.

Drawn entirely from the words of Truman Capote, Tru was originally staged in 1989 and charts a turbulent period in the writer’s life.

Set in December 1975, the play finds Capote alone in his New York apartment following a crisis that shattered his relationships with the elite social circle he treasured. The piece offers a portrait of an artist confronting the fallout from his most controversial work.

Ferguson, best known internationally for playing Mitchell Pritchett in Modern Family, will lead the production as Capote. His recent stage credits include Here We Are at the National Theatre and Jesus Christ Superstar at The London Palladium.

Joining him is Broadway veteran Charlotte d’Amboise, whose extensive theatre career includes acclaimed performances in A Chorus Line, Chicago, Pippin, Sweet Charity and Damn Yankees. She made her Broadway debut in Cats and has received multiple award nominations and honours throughout her career.

The creative team for Tru includes set designer Paul Farnsworth, costume designer Jaimal Odedra, lighting designer Jamie Platt, sound designer Adam Cork and associate director Kate Tydman.

The production is presented by the Menier Chocolate Factory in association with Seaview, OHenry Productions, Mickey Liddell & Pete Shilaimon, and A Dog Named Beckett Productions.
