Border Crossings marks a major milestone with CHECKPOINT: 30 Years of Border Crossings, an evening of performance and reflection celebrating 30 years of intercultural theatre-making.

Taking place at Hoxton Hall on Friday 28th November 2025, the event revisits the company’s archive while looking ahead to the future of global theatre.

A centrepiece of the evening will be Bravely Fights the Queen, a new short play by Mahesh Dattani that revisits characters from his 1996 work Bravely Fought the Queen. The original cast returns, including Siddiqua Akhtar (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, BBC/Netflix; Tartuffe, Birmingham Rep) and Harvey Virdi (Bend It Like Beckham, Brick Lane, Hollyoaks).

Also featured is Cultural Exchange, a new play by Brian Woolland responding to his earlier work Double Tongue. Set in the 21st century, it stars Hungarian film actor Dorka Gryllus and Andrew French (Winter’s Tale, RSC; Great Expectations, Manchester Royal Exchange; A Very English Scandal, BBC).

The evening will also showcase original short plays from students inspired by the Border Crossings archive, highlighting the intergenerational impact of the company’s work.

Artistic Director Michael Walling contributes a monologue for The Death of Prospero, performed by Mauritian actor Nisha Dassyne.

Walling says, “It’s a rare privilege to be able to look back over three decades of theatre-making. Working on CHECKPOINT has of course shown us how far the company has come in its own journey of intercultural theatre-making and production; but it has also shown us how very much the world has changed, and I don’t feel that every change has been a positive one. At a time when racism and prejudice are on the march again, a theatre of intercultural exchange and collaboration is more needed than ever. Using our past work to provoke and galvanise young people’s creativity is our way of offering some kind of hope for the future.”

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, CHECKPOINT: 30 Years of Border Crossings blends archival material, new writing, and collaboration across generations to celebrate the company’s legacy and future.
