Acclaimed Scottish actors Claire Dargo and Scott Fletcher will star in the world premiere of Overtone, a new play by Fringe First award-winning writer Tom Brennan, at the Pleasance Dome during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026.

Presented by The North Wall, Overtone runs from 5 to 30 August 2026 at the Pleasance Dome’s Jack Dome venue, with performances excluding 12, 19 and 26 August.

Brennan is known for his award-winning work including Education, Education, Education and Last of the Pelican Daughters. Overtone marks the latest world premiere from The North Wall’s ArtsLab development programme, following the success of Brown Boys Swim and E8, both Fringe First winners.

Claire Dargo, best known for playing Karen Connolly in River City, takes on one of the lead roles. Her theatre credits include Thread and Crush, earning two Stage Awards nominations, while her screen work includes Shetland, Doctors and Catastrophe.

Joining her is fellow River City star Scott Fletcher, recognised by television audiences as Angus in the long-running drama. His credits also include Still Game, Taggart, Outlander and The Nest, alongside extensive theatre work with the National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep and Citizens Theatre.

In Overtone, two teenagers meet after choir practice and begin what becomes the most important relationship of their lives. Years later, an unexpected encounter with their former choir director forces them to confront the lasting psychological impact he has had on both their lives and their relationship.

As past and present collide, the play explores power dynamics, memory and the ways formative experiences continue to shape adulthood. The production examines what a healthy relationship really looks like, asking whether it is ever possible to fully escape the influence of the past.

The production is directed by John Hoggarth, whose previous work includes The Beasts* and the Fringe First-winning Brown Boys Swim. Design is by David Spence, with lighting design by James Bailey.

Produced by Ria Parry for The North Wall, Overtone continues the company’s commitment to developing and premiering bold new writing from emerging theatre-makers.
