Corn Exchange Newbury has announced a vibrant summer programme of free Outdoor Arts, transforming Newbury town centre into a stage with performance taking place throughout the day and into the evening.
The programme launches on 21 June with BLOCK, a super-charged reimagining of the iconic show featuring gravity-defying physical performance in Newbury’s Market Place.
The production uses an innovative set of 20 oversized blocks, stacked like giant Jenga pieces, which performers climb, balance and manipulate using aerial dance-circus techniques.
Internationally renowned dance theatre company ADHOK will present Watchful on 25 July, a heartfelt outdoor performance charting a couple’s journey from their early twenties through the decades of their life together.
Alongside the performance, local dance artists and theatre professionals will be able to train with ADHOK at 101 Outdoor Arts on Greenham Business Park through a four-day residential summer school titled The Language of Dance Theatre Outdoors, running from 27 to 30 July.
Danielle Corbishley, Head of 101 and Outdoor Programmes, said: “We are delighted to be bringing another rambunctious programme of incredible outdoor performances to Newbury this year starting with Motionhouse in June and ADHOK in July, each show bringing different character, energy and style. Gather up your grandparents, children and neighbours and bring them along to see some outdoor magic! There’s plenty more to look out for in the year with exciting performances from Rara Woulib in September and our annual Festival of Light in December.”
The Outdoor Arts programme is delivered by 101 Outdoor Arts, the Corn Exchange’s National Centre for Arts in Public Space, which provides residency, training and development opportunities for artists working outdoors across the UK and internationally.
