A world premiere production of the new musical Dark of the Moon will open at Charing Cross Theatre, running from Monday 18 May to Saturday 8 August 2026, with a national press night on Tuesday 26 May.

The musical is based on the 1941 play by Howard D Richardson and William Berney, reimagined with a book by Emmy Award nominee Jonathan Prince and music and lyrics by Grammy Award‑winning songwriters Lindy Robbins, Dave Bassett and Steve Robson.

Directed by Georgie Rankcom, the show explores themes of witchcraft, prejudice and forbidden love against a backdrop inspired by Appalachian folklore.

The story follows Barbara Allen, a human girl, and John, a witch‑boy, who attempt to build a life together despite pressure from their communities and a dark pact that threatens their future.

The musical blends country and bluegrass influences with rock, reflecting the clash between the mystical Smoky Mountains and the rural town below.

Rankcom said, “Dark of the Moon has captivated audiences since the 1940s, and it’s exciting to see the story finding new resonance today — most recently through its appearance in the world of Stranger Things. This musical adaptation allows us to rediscover the story for a new generation.”

The creative team includes choreographer Jane McMurtrie, musical supervisor Brad Haak, musical director Matt Herbert, orchestrator Dillon Kondor and casting director Peter Noden.

Production design is by Libby Todd, lighting design by Jonathan Chan and sound design by Andrew Johnson.

The show is produced by WitzEnd Productions LLC and Steven M Levy for Charing Cross Theatre Productions Limited, with general management by Steven M. Levy. It is presented by special arrangement with the Richardson/Yale Property Trust and Elliot S. Blair.

Full casting will be announced at a later date.
