The worldwide phenomenon DEATH NOTE: THE MUSICAL will return to London’s Barbican Theatre from 23 March to 15 May 2027 following the sold-out success of its acclaimed 2026 season.
Produced by HoriPro and Trafalgar Theatre Productions in association with the Barbican, the musical’s return comes after breaking venue records for the highest-grossing week of a musical and achieving five consecutive records for the highest-grossing single performance of a musical at the Barbican.
Based on the bestselling manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, DEATH NOTE: THE MUSICAL features music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy, additional lyrics by Morgan Reilly and a book by Ivan Menchell.
The production tells the story of Light Yagami, a gifted student who discovers a mysterious notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside it. As he sets out to reshape the world according to his own sense of justice, he finds himself locked in a high-stakes battle of wits with the enigmatic detective known as L.
The musical has enjoyed a decade of success across Asia and has become a global theatrical phenomenon, following acclaimed productions in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and London, as well as record-breaking concert performances at the London Palladium.
This new London staging is directed by Stephen Whitson, whose credits include Hamilton and Moulin Rouge! The Musical. The creative team also includes choreographer Fabian Aloise, set designer Jon Bausor and musical supervisor, orchestrator and arranger Jason Howland.
With a score combining rock music and soaring power ballads, the production brings the iconic manga to life through large-scale theatrical design, visual spectacle and a story exploring justice, morality and power.
The 2027 engagement will run for eight weeks at the Barbican Theatre, with tickets now on sale.
