Unshaded Arts presents Because, a powerful solo show exploring undiagnosed mental illness, masculinity, and the weight of past trauma. Written and performed by Hassan Govia and directed by Rebecca Goh, the show runs from 1–23 August (excluding 10 August) at theSpace Triplex (Studio).
The story follows Jade, a chronic overthinker who uses self-dialogue as a coping mechanism. But when unexpected news resurfaces memories of bullying and emotional wounds, his internal monologue begins to spiral. Performed against a pre-recorded soundtrack of his thoughts, Because is a raw and intimate portrayal of a man at odds with his own mind.
Following a preview at Camden Fringe, Because marks Govia’s Edinburgh debut and is supported by the Keep it Fringe fund. With themes of mortality, privilege, and mental health—particularly from the perspective of men of colour—this is a bold and timely piece of new writing.
