Comedian, actor and writer Debra Tammer brings her acclaimed solo show Debra Tammer: Extraordinary Alien to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, sharing a hilarious and heartfelt true story about immigration, identity and embracing what makes us different.
The show begins when Tammer, a Jewish actress and mother from Leeds, moves to New York on her husband’s visa, only to lose her immigration status overnight. Faced with applying for an American “Alien of Extraordinary Ability” visa, she must somehow prove that she is exceptional enough to stay.
What follows is a witty and sharply observed exploration of family, motherhood, cultural clashes and the absurdities of the immigration system. Along the way audiences encounter an array of colourful characters and stories, including a failed clown career, a Slovenian cleaning lady alter ego, three strong-willed daughters and an endorsement from Gareth Malone OBE.
Warm, self-deprecating and packed with memorable observations, the show examines belonging, antisemitism and personal identity while celebrating the quirks and qualities that make each of us unique. Combining humour with genuine emotional resonance, Tammer’s storytelling turns a bureaucratic challenge into a joyful celebration of individuality.
Debra Tammer: Extraordinary Alien runs at Shanghai at Le Monde from 24 – 30 August at 14:30. Tickets are on sale here
