Following a successful previous run, Deluge returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with its distinctive blend of comedy, physical theatre and magical realism, offering a tender and darkly humorous exploration of grief.
Created and performed by Gabi Flares, this one-woman show invites audiences into a surreal world where emotional turmoil manifests in increasingly literal ways. In the aftermath of a relationship, a woman finds herself overwhelmed, sifting through the stories of others in an attempt to make sense of her own experience. But as she struggles to contain her thoughts, her surroundings begin to betray her, with leaks appearing throughout her home and the water level steadily rising.
Drawing on over 40 interviews gathered through a social media call-out, Deluge weaves together a kaleidoscope of perspectives on loss and mourning. The result is a richly layered piece that reflects on the different stages of grief, blending personal storytelling with broader shared experiences.
Combining text, movement, clowning, original music and projection, the production creates a visually inventive and emotionally resonant theatrical experience. Flares’ background as an actress, dancer and clown informs the show’s interdisciplinary style, allowing it to move seamlessly between humour and heartbreak.
Directed by Andrea Maciel, Deluge brings a physical and poetic approach to its themes, crafting a performance that is both intimate and expansive. Together, Flares and Maciel create a “dramedy” that embraces the absurdity and intensity of grief, ultimately offering a life-affirming perspective on letting go and moving forward.
Praised as “an absurd, tender and life-affirming piece”, the show has resonated with audiences for its honesty, creativity and emotional depth. With its unique theatrical language and universal themes, Deluge promises to be a captivating return to the Fringe.
Deluge runs at Underbelly Cowgate (Big Belly) from 5 – 30 August (not 18 August) at 15:30. Tickets are on sale here
