International stage and screen actor Maxwell Caulfield brings the powerful one-man drama PILATE: The Lost Gospel to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, performing at the Pleasance Courtyard.

Best known for his roles in Grease 2, Empire Records, Dynasty, Casualty and Emmerdale, Caulfield takes on the complex role of Pontius Pilate in this compelling solo performance. Written by Michael Punter and directed by Asaad Kelada, the play offers a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on one of history’s most controversial figures.

Set in Rome in 36AD, the story unfolds as Pilate is summoned back to answer for his actions as Governor of Judea. Through his testimony, audiences are invited to reconsider the events surrounding the trial and execution of Jesus Christ. Drawing on historical texts and primary sources, the play presents a layered portrait of a man grappling with accountability, doubt and the burden of a decision that has defined his legacy.

Rather than presenting a straightforward retelling, PILATE: The Lost Gospel explores the moral ambiguity of its central character. Pilate emerges not as a clear-cut villain or innocent bystander, but as a human figure caught in the complexities of power and responsibility. The production examines how narratives are shaped and how individuals reconcile themselves with the consequences of their actions.

Caulfield said, “Pontius Pilate is one of history’s most controversial figures. What drew me to the play was the compelling humanity in Michael Punter’s writing… it is about accountability, doubt and the stories people tell themselves in order to live with the consequences of their actions.”

Co-producer Juliet Mills added that the piece is “a haunting, thought-provoking piece of theatre that feels remarkably relevant to the world we are living in today.”

With its blend of historical drama and psychological insight, PILATE: The Lost Gospel offers audiences an intimate and compelling theatrical experience, led by a seasoned performer bringing depth and nuance to a timeless story.

PILATE: The Lost Gospel runs at Pleasance Courtyard from 05 – 30 August at 10:45. Tickets are on sale here
