The Ghost of White Hart Lane returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe following sold-out runs and critical acclaim, bringing a powerful solo performance that blends sporting history with personal storytelling.
Centred on legendary Tottenham Hotspur footballer John White, the play traces his remarkable career and untimely death, while also exploring the journey of his son Rob, who set out to understand a father he never knew. Known as “The Ghost” for his ability to appear unexpectedly on the pitch, White’s story is told through a series of moments that move across time.
Performed by Cal Newman, the production brings to life multiple characters, shifting seamlessly between perspectives to explore both the public figure and the private man. The narrative moves between past and present, drawing connections between John’s life and Rob’s search for identity decades later.
While rooted in football history, the play extends far beyond the sport, examining themes of grief, legacy and the human need to make sense of loss. Its combination of humour and emotional honesty has resonated with audiences regardless of their connection to football.
With its mix of biography and theatre, The Ghost of White Hart Lane offers a compelling and accessible story that continues to find new audiences.
The Ghost of White Hart Lane runs at Underbelly Bristo Square from 5 – 30 August at 14:55. Tickets are on sale here
