Donna Oblongata brings a wildly inventive theatrical experience to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with The Van Gogh Shogh, a high-energy solo show blending comedy, audience participation and artistic exploration.
Reimagining Vincent van Gogh as a bewildered food courier trapped in his own immersive afterlife, the production invites audiences into a world of barely controlled chaos. Combining elements of sip-and-paint, karaoke and live performance, the show challenges audiences to reconsider the value of art and creativity.
Each performance sees four audience members recruited on stage to recreate one of Van Gogh’s masterpieces under his guidance, resulting in a unique and unpredictable theatrical experience every night. With a soundtrack featuring 1980s power ballads and a subversive narrative twist, the show promises both laughter and reflection.
Oblongata, a Philadelphia-based performer and artist, has built a reputation for her quirky, compassionate and “monstrously funny” work. The production is directed by Francesca Montanile-Lyons and arrives in Edinburgh following successful runs in London and Amsterdam.
At its heart, The Van Gogh Shogh explores the struggles faced by artists, particularly those navigating the financial and emotional realities of bringing work to the Fringe. Oblongata’s piece invites audiences to rethink how society values art and the people who create it.
The Van Gogh Shogh runs at Assembly George Street from 06 – 30 August at 18:25. Tickets are on sale here
