Collaborating for the first time with acclaimed political comedian and director Mark Thomas, award-winning theatre maker Victoria Melody returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Trouble, Struggle, Bubble and Squeak – a bold and playful new theatre piece celebrating the power of community and the ordinary people who shape history.
What began as a personal journey through a historical re-enactment society evolved into a powerful exploration of grassroots activism, inspired by the 17th-century radicals known as The Diggers. These early revolutionaries occupied common land to farm it in the face of poverty and starvation – and their spirit lives on in today’s communities still fighting for justice and space.
Blending storytelling and stand-up, Melody’s show relays the stories of modern-day Diggers – people stepping up where systems have failed. With warmth, humour and heart, Trouble, Struggle, Bubble and Squeak brings real communities to the stage, highlighting the beauty and resilience found in grassroots organising.
Known for her immersive, documentary-style theatre, Melody partners with food justice advocates, green space campaigners and local activists. Young people have contributed to the sound design, and local knitting groups have supported set and prop creation, making this a truly collaborative production.
Before arriving in Edinburgh, the show previews in Bath, London, Colchester, Eastleigh and at Latitude Festival.
