We Had Fun makes its world premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a provocative new drama exploring consent, truth and memory in the modern age.
Written and performed by Emmeline Hartley and Jack Mullings, and directed by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, the play centres on two close friends attempting to piece together the fallout of a drunken sexual encounter. As their conflicting memories are replayed, rewound and reinterpreted, the audience is drawn into a complex and uncomfortable exploration of perspective.
Blending physical theatre with sharp dialogue, We Had Fun examines the blurred lines between truth and perception in an era shaped by social media, cancel culture and competing narratives. The production challenges audiences to confront their own assumptions about credibility, accountability and bias.
The piece draws inspiration from real-world cultural debates and personal experiences, including Hartley’s widely viewed short film Keep Breathing. Through its layered storytelling, the play interrogates how narratives are shaped, distorted and weaponised.
Directed by Olivier and Tony Award nominee Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, the production brings a bold and unflinching approach to difficult subject matter, encouraging meaningful conversation rather than offering easy answers.
With its mix of dark humour and emotional intensity, We Had Fun promises a powerful and resonant addition to this year’s Fringe.
We Had Fun runs at Summerhall from 06 – 31 August at 18:00. Tickets are on sale hereÂ
