Woody Sez: The Life & Music of Woody Guthrie returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, bringing a celebrated musical portrait of the American folk legend back to the city nearly two decades after its original debut.
Devised and performed by David M. Lutken alongside a cast of actor-musicians, the show weaves together Guthrie’s songs with stories drawn from his life. Using autobiographical writings, letters and journalism, it traces his journey from the Dust Bowl and Great Depression through to his later years, capturing both the hardships and the resilience that shaped his work.
Performed with more than twenty instruments shared across the cast, the production creates an intimate live music experience, with performers moving fluidly between narration, character and song. The result evokes the communal spirit of folk traditions while exploring Guthrie’s enduring impact on music and culture.
As well as celebrating his life, the show reflects on the continuing relevance of Guthrie’s work, which resonates with contemporary audiences through its exploration of social and political struggle, as well as its sense of humour and optimism.
Having toured extensively worldwide, Woody Sez continues to connect new audiences with Guthrie’s music through its blend of storytelling and live performance.
Woody Sez: The Life & Music of Woody Guthrie runs at Underbelly Bristo Square from 5 – 30 August at 17:30. Tickets are on sale hereÂ
